At Signature Performance, we celebrate our similarities as much as our differences and we wholeheartedly believe that diversity is an essential component of our company culture and Associate experience. Living out our organization’s philosophy and the practice of seeing what’s right in everyone is really important to our team. Every day, we have the honor and privilege to celebrate every person, every difference, and every life.
This year at Signature Performance, our team has put a lot of thought and intentionality into how we will recognize the importance of Juneteenth. On Saturday, June 19th, Americans across the country will commemorate Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day. A day that honors the emancipation of enslaved people in the U.S., and is the oldest known celebration recognizing the end of slavery in the United States. In 1865, a Union Army general arrived in Galveston, Texas, to inform enslaved Black Americans that the Civil War had ended, and slavery was abolished. This was about two-and-a-half years after President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation had gone into effect, declaring that “…all persons held as slaves …henceforward shall be free.”
I am thankful that I grew up learning the importance of treating everyone equally. However, over the course of my life, I discovered and experienced that our policies and behaviors don’t always match true equality. One of the ways I believe we can move forward and address racial injustice as a nation is to examine and understand the past, present, and look for ways to break the caste system in our country for the good of everyone. As an organization, we have made an intentional effort to educate ourselves about each other’s unique experiences. We will support those who are mourning during this time and celebrate with those who are celebrating. I believe that Juneteenth is a moment for reflection and unity.
The team at Signature Performance has been closely watching the progress of the legislation that has made Juneteenth a Federal holiday. We are extremely pleased with the outcome and believe it is a step in the right direction. At Signature Performance, we believe celebrating a day such as Juneteenth creates a space for belonging, sharing our collective stories, and genuine togetherness that I feel will inspire diversity not only within our organization, but within the Greater Omaha area, surrounding communities, and beyond.
Over this upcoming holiday weekend, I encourage you to take time to learn more about Juneteenth and what it means to our Black neighbors and our country’s history. Join me in remembering what freedom means to each of us – remembering that everyone in America has an inalienable right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
